Visual Identity, Print Design, Illustration
Overview
“All Water has a Perfect Memory” was an art exhibition hosted by The Elizabeth River Foundation to promote awareness of local environmental issues.
Problem
How may we connect viewers with the heart of the exhibition?
Solution
The brochure's interior features a detailed map guiding visitors through the exhibition, highlighting key art pieces while conveying The Elizabeth River Project’s mission. When unfolded, the reverse side transforms into an illustrated poster, serving as a visual reminder of the exhibition's goals.
Research & Development
The initial stages involved studying art exhibit logo designs and existing museum brochures to understand how artwork is typically presented. Simultaneously, time was spent exploring art and design with an environmental focus. Analyzing illustration trends in environmental posters alongside the clean, sophisticated aesthetics of museum brochures helped establish a balanced approach—one that seamlessly blends both styles into a cohesive piece of print media.
The Logo
Two primary directions were explored for the logo design, starting with a concept based on a water droplet. However, after further development, this approach was set aside in favor of a more refined and abstract design that more effectively captures the exhibition's theme.
Map & Brochure
The exhibition site was visited to gain a clear understanding of the layout. After making adjustments based on initial sketches, the finalized map was designed to guide viewers through the participating artists' pieces with precision and detail.
Poster
A wide range of visual approaches was explored and refined to identify the most effective elements for communicating the exhibition’s values and ensuring cohesion across the print materials. The final illustration embraces simplicity, subtly highlighting concerns about the river while avoiding producing any negative connotations associated with water.
Project
Outcome
To raise awareness and foster understanding of local environmental concerns related to rising water levels, The Elizabeth River Project organized this art exhibition. To reflect the thoughtful nature of their message, it was essential to emphasize water in a respectful and positive light. Portraying water solely as a negative force would have undermined the event’s intent. The final print materials incorporated water-inspired imagery and design elements, striking a balance between solemnity and respect while adhering to a clean, structured exhibition design for clear and effective communication.
