Overview

The ocean accounts for the majority of the Earth’s surface and has a broad range of interest points.

Problem

How may we engage casual readers interested in pelagic subject matters?

Solution

The Lighthouse is a magazine dedicated to exploring all aspects of marine life and culture, encompassing topics such as science, discovery, history, and sailing. Rather than focusing on a single niche, it offers a comprehensive overview of diverse subjects, making it accessible and engaging for a wide-ranging audience.

Visual Identity

The name "Lighthouse" and its logo were inspired by the sweeping beams of a lighthouse, symbolizing guidance in darkness and illuminating vast areas of the ocean. A warm blue-green palette was chosen to complement the oceanic theme, while black and white accents evoke the depth and mystery of the sea.

Layout

The design process began with extensive sketching of spread layouts, aiming to craft a visually engaging experience that avoids monotony. A key priority was maintaining ample breathing room between text and images. To enhance interest and pacing, full-spread advertisement samples were incorporated between articles, paired with an alternating light and dark backdrop for added contrast and rhythm.

The Magazine

The final magazine featured a diverse collection of spreads covering a wide range of marine-related topics, incorporating visual assets, written content, and imagery. Articles and images were sourced online, all credit to the original creators and publishers.

Project
Outcome

The Lighthouse magazine is designed to engage readers with a diverse range of pelagic topics while inspiring curiosity and new interests. Its use of color and visual elements strikes a balance between consistency for cohesion and variety to sustain attention. Given the ocean’s vast significance to our shared world, the final magazine offers endless opportunities to explore and educate on its many facets.
